To do freestyle tricks, you need a foil with plenty of glide. Foils with a lot of area and wingspan work well, but a smaller foil, if you give it more speed, can achieve the same effect.
In my case, I learned them on a Gong Sirus XXL, but once I learned them, I discovered they were just as easy to do on a Gong Sirus XL.
Most tricks start the same way, so here are some general tips:
- Attempt the trick soon after takeoff. You need your legs and body at 100% balance and speed, so get out, do at most one turn to get back to the dock, and start the trick as soon as possible.
- Always start by speeding up the foil, increasing your pumping speed, and pushing hard.
- Before starting the trick, make sure you’re high on the pole. Since you’re going fast, it’ll be very easy to achieve this by simply pumping deeply with your back foot.
- Before starting freestyle, it’s important to master the pump and glide technique. That is, do 3 or 4 pumps and then slide for 1 second.
With practice, you’ll be able to glide smoothly through the trick, but at first, it’ll be helpful to follow the pump cadence throughout the trick, that is, performing each step of the trick according to the pump cadence. But we’ll cover this in more detail with each trick.
