I’ve had the Sirus L, XL, and XXL version 2 wings, so I’m going to share my impressions of each one while pumping. I understand the v3s have the same shape but are lighter, so they’ll be a little more efficient, but the final comparison will be similar. As a reference, I weigh 70 kg.
- Sirus L. I managed to pump for my first minute with it, but after trying the other Sirus wings, I don’t think this foil is worth it at my weight. It works, you can learn with it, you can drop start it, etc. But it requires too high a pumping frequency, which tires you quickly. The only reason would be if you also want to use it to catch waves, but even then, I think it would be more efficient to opt for a Gong Curve H XXL, a similar size but with more lift.
- Sirus XL. It’s very versatile; it allows you to relax your pumping a lot so you don’t get too tired. It allows you to do freestyle tricks. Turning is still easy despite my 136 cm wingspan. It’s perfect for catching waves from small or medium-sized boats because it has a good pumping capacity to reach the boat without being too big for the waves. I’ve even used it to catch small waves, although you have to be careful to put your weight forward as soon as you catch the wave so the foil doesn’t leave the water.
- Sirus XXL. I only find it interesting if your goal is to last a long time on each ride and in flat water. I currently have my record with it under 10 minutes, although I’m gradually increasing it as I improve technically, and I don’t think I’ve reached my limit. It’s also good for freestyle tricks, although I’m not sure if it’s better for this than the XL.Turns are a little more difficult due to its wingspan, but this problem disappears with a little practice. It’s not good when there’s choppy water, small waves, or rough seas, as you feel forces that destabilize you (for this, the XL is better).I’ve tried it wakeboarding and in small waves, but it doesn’t work well either. It doesn’t grip the wave better, and you lose a lot of flexibility when moving around the wave.
- Sirus 3XL, 4XL… I haven’t tried them, but I don’t see many people using them. Besides, the Sirus XXL already weighs a lot, so I imagine they’ll be even heavier, and the improvement in glide won’t be so great that it’s worth the investment and carrying such a large foil. Also, on the Sirus XL, the screws loosen frequently and need to be tightened (this doesn’t happen on the v3), and on the Sirus XXL, the screws loosen even faster, so I assume they’ll loosen even more on these even larger wings.
