You’re looking for a suitable jetty to run on, but you can’t find one. It won’t be ideal, but I’ll give you some ideas:
- Floating platform. If you have a deep spot but no dock, you can build yourself a floating platform where you can place your board and jump on it with a little running. It’s easy to do this with PVC pipes that you can buy cheaply in any DIY store. To give it buoyancy, some people use even bigger pipes at the base, and others like me use a bodyboard in which we cut a hole in the middle for the mast. You can also buy one made by North if you don’t feel like building it and have the money to invest in it.

- A plank as a ramp. You can place a long board on the ground to run on like these ones made by Kirk

- Ladder on the beach. If you have a beach or similar nearby but you don’t have a jetty with a ladder submerged in the water where it’s not too deep yet, you can build your own platform. There are ladders that don’t end in a peak but can be placed on a flat surface. The distance to run won’t be ideal, but it’s always better than nothing. Here you can see Gael’s example with this system.
- Use a leash. If you have a jetty but there is a hazard nearby that could hit the board if it goes away, you can also put on a leash. This way, if you see that the board is turning towards the hazard, you can jump and with the leash the board will stop before reaching the hazard and will not end up destroyed.
