When you know how to pumpfoil, it seems like transitioning to prone foiling (starting lying down on the board) will be easy, but it’s not. These are the steps that seem easiest to follow if you already know how to pumpfoil:
1 – Wakethieving/wakefoiling.
Catching small waves from boats with a large foil would be the most direct path for someone who knows how to pumpfoil. Start with the smallest waves farthest from the boat, getting a feel for the waves, and gradually move to larger waves closer to the motor. This way, you learn how to move on the waves and feel their power.
2 – Rockstart/deadstart + surf foil
The second step would be to start surfing ocean waves with a relatively large foil, launching standing up from a pier, stairs, or rock into the waves. This way, you eliminate the critical takeoff moment and can start with small, easy waves before they break.
3 – Prone Foil – Surf foil with a prone start.
This is the closest thing to classic surfing, starting at the peak of the wave or in the whitewater of a breaking wave. Even if you’ve practiced surfing without foiling, this style seems the most difficult to me. Some people go directly from classic surfing to surf foiling successfully, but many others fail.
