People tend to give too much importance to arm movement when pumping. Sometimes they become obsessed with moving them back and forth like the pros, as if that would change a bad pump.
- Arm movement only adds power to the pump, but if the pump is bad, it won’t fix it; it will only make you more tired.
- The primary function of the arms is balance. When we have a weak moment, brush against some seaweed, or get distracted, we will correct our balance with our arms, and this function is much more important than keeping our arms synchronized. So if your balance is still not good, let your arms move freely as your balance demands.
- Arm movement consumes energy and oxygen; if we routinely use it at times when we don’t need special power, we are wasting energy.
- n my opinion, forward and backward arm movements are only interesting when, for some reason, we want to give more speed or power to the pump. Before a turn, before a trick, or when we notice our legs are tired and we want to gain a few seconds by using our arms to provide the power our legs are lacking.
- if you don’t have any special power needs, move your arms if you like and it helps you move back and forth, but gently without wasting energy you’ll need to pump with the rest of your body.
