I always recommend starting with your hands on the board, for safety and because I think it’s easier. But some people who aren’t flexible enough to do so might find this approach suitable. I don’t use it much, but it must be very popular in Switzerland.
It consists of pushing the board backward with the foil in the water and jumping first with your back foot, like I do in the twister or tomahawk. If you’re on a high dock, it doesn’t seem like a bad start, but if the dock is low, I find it much easier to rest your hands on the board.
Steps to follow:
- Place the foil right on the surface with just a millimeter of water above it.
- Place your front foot forward (on the edge) while pumping.
- Lean your body back slightly to gain momentum.
- Push the board backward with your usual back hand, so that the board rides flat.
- At the same time, we jump forward (not up), landing first with the back foot and immediately after with the front foot. Forward momentum is important to give the board speed when landing.
It’s key to push the board straight and with enough momentum, but that takes practice.
