My first 8 sessions were with a handmade pine board and in the 9th session I started with a f-one rocket All bamboo 4′ 2″. Here are the advantages I noticed in each one when changing:
Handmade pine board 84cms
- Very cheap. I didn’t put epoxy or carbon or anything on it, so it was practically free of charge.
- When you are a beginner you don’t know how to handle the foil+board well and you have to get on and off the dock many times, so not worrying about the blows the board takes is an advantage.
- By adjusting the size of the board and being narrower you can see the foil better when you run with it on the dock.
- Because the board is narrower and thinner the jump is somewhat shorter, and this is good when you don’t have it automated yet.
- Because it is shorter it is more difficult to touch the tip with the water when pumping
- You can attach a handlebar from a cut scooter.
Surf foil – Fone rocket 4’2”
- It is more forgiving when a foot is badly positioned. I think it is because of the shape of the board.
- When the board touches the water, it is still possible to lift the foil if you have speed left when it hits the water.
- Getting back to the dock paddling on it takes less effort and is faster because it has more buoyancy.
- Mounting and releasing the foil is much faster because it has the typical slots to insert foil and not normal screws.
Conclusion:
I think the handmade board is fine for the first 5 sessions or so, after that the surf foil board is better.
