To learn rock start I think it makes no sense to start on a rock. First it is better to learn to start pumping in the same way but in a safe and controlled environment, with easy entry and exit from the water, without any kind of run, like the end of the dock, what we would call a dead start.
To do this you have to go through different progressive stages:
- Start from a dock of about 20 cms, if possible with a little current against you to help
- The same but without current, or from an even lower dock
- The same but a dock that is not floating and therefore you cannot delay the foil under you.
- Finally we would go to a real rock.
The steps to follow would be:
- Put the foil almost on the surface.
- Place your hands on the sides of the board more or less at the same height as we placed them for the dock start, supporting your hands.
- Push the board a little forward and quickly place your hands on the board.Place the foil almost on the surface.
- Place your hands on the sides of the board at roughly the same height you placed them for the dock start, supporting your hands.
- Push the board slightly forward and quickly place your hands on the board. You have to be very quick; explosiveness is key.
- Apply pressure to the board ONLY with your back hand. The front hand only guides and doesn’t apply any pressure to keep the board from dropping.
- At the same time, we push the board forward with our body at the start of the jump.
- Land on the board, trying to land both legs almost at the same time, or in any case, the back leg first.
- Do two or three quick pumps, emphasizing the back foot.
