When we are going to do a dock start, the easiest way is to run towards the side where we put the front foot. For example, if we are goofy (right foot forward) the easiest way is to run towards the right side. But sometimes on the good side there can be a boat, a rock or something that prevents us from doing so, so it is not a bad idea to learn to start running towards the opposite side to the natural one.
- Grab the board with your hands in the opposite way to how your legs will go. That is, if your front leg is going to go forward you will have to put your left hand in front and vice versa.
- Try to put your hands as far forward as possible because your legs will tend to stay too far back, so the further forward we are starting the better.
- Run along the dock, without speed the foil will not start working and you will not be able to support yourself on the board with your hands to get on.
- At the corner of the dock, lean on that same corner where you put your hands strongly to propel yourself up.
- At the same time you have to make a quick hip turn. This is important to practice at home to get the muscle memory right as you can see in the video.
- When jumping your head should be thinking about bringing the front foot as far forward as possible otherwise you will tend to put both feet too close together at the back of the board.
- It is difficult to get both feet positioned perfectly so on the first release of weight from the board you have to correct the position of your feet. Typically you will have to bring your right foot forward.
